Annual ball raises scholarship money

In two years, the Hawai'i chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has raised $24,000 and awarded college scholarships to 11 Hawai'i high school seniors.

The sorority will hold its annual Emerald Ball on April 27 at Ko'olau Golf Course's ballroom, the proceeds of which are used for scholarships. The event is sold out, said the sorority's scholarship chairwoman Gwendolyn Johnson.


Language educators receive recognition

The Hawai'i Association of Language Teachers has honored the achievements and contributions of two teachers: Junko Hanai Agena and Gary Nobuyuki Kanada.

Agena, a Japanese-language teacher at 'Aina Haina Elementary School, was recognized for her contribution to innovative teaching and community outreach.

Kanada, a Hawaiian- and Japanese-language teacher at Hawai'i Pacific University, was honored for his teaching and pioneering efforts to develop the Hawaiian language program.

Both teachers were honored at a March 9 award ceremony at HPU's Hawai'i Loa campus.


Kaua'i teacher wins quarterly award

Dorothy Hoe, an English teacher at Kaua'i High School, has been selected as the Educator of the Quarter by Duke's Kaua'i.

Hoe has taught at Kaua'i High for 13 years and is adviser of the school's mock trial team, which is the four-time defending state champion.

She will receive a gift certificate for the award and her name will be added to a plaque at the school.


New artists guide available for sale

Copies of the new edition of the Artists in Hawai'i Guide are available for $5.

The guide is a resource for information on about 200 artists, arts programs and services in Hawai'i in the fields of dance, literary arts, media arts, music, puppetry, storytelling, theater and visual arts.

Teachers and others looking for artists can use the guide, which is put out by the Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education, the Department of Education's Artists in the Schools Program and the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Statewide Cultural Extension Program.

Call the Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education at 941-2787 to order a copy. The Artists in Hawai'i Internet Guide also can be accessed at the Hawai'i Allience for Arts Education Web site.


Celtic storyteller offers free shows

Patrick Ball, one of the world's premier Celtic harp players and an acclaimed storyteller in the Celtic tradition, will return to Hawai'i April 16-23 to perform at nine public libraries.

The free public performances are part of National Library Week.

Ball will perform his "Celtic Harp and Story" program:

  • 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wahiawa Public Library
  • 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library
  • 10:30 a.m. next Thursday at 'Aina Haina Public Library
  • 6:30 p.m. next Thursday at Hawai'i Kai Public Library
  • 10:30 a.m. April 20 at Kahului Public Library
  • 2 p.m. April 21 at Kaimuki Public Library
  • 2:30 p.m. April 22 at 'Ewa Beach Public and School Library
  • 7 p.m. April 22 at Mililani Public Library
  • 6:30 p.m. April 23 at Kailua-Kona Public Library
