Kalaheo topples Kahuku, 51-47, in OIA basketball

Under extreme conditions, the Kalaheo High School girls basketball team stayed in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division title chase last night with a tough road victory at previously unbeaten Kahuku, 51-47.
Kalaheo (5-1) was down 30-18 late in the second period, but sophomore point guard Bre Carson sank three consecutive 3-point baskets to cut Kahuku's lead to 30-27 going into the half.
In the second half, the Mustangs tightened their 2-3 zone defense and on offense went inside to sophomore post player Latoya Wiley, a transfer from Kahuku. Wiley scored eight of her 10 points in the final two periods.
"I told my teammates to not be scared in here, because if we play scared, we'll lose," said Wiley, who was playing against cousin Karly Tailele and in front of many friends and relatives. "I know most of the (Kahuku) girls, but I just tried to be calm and play my game. In the first half, I think I was too calm."
The Red Raiders (5-1) found openings in Kalaheo's first-half press and scored 16 points off layups in transition. Those opportunities vanished in the second half, however, as the Mustangs dropped back into their zone. Kahuku also struggled from the free-throw line, making only 3 of 16 attempts. In the second half, the Red Raiders made only 1 of 8 free throws.
"I told the girls that in this game, the difference was free throws," Kahuku coach Mona Ah Hoy said. "We didn't make ours."
Kalaheo was only slightly better, making 12 of 30. But the Mustangs made enough to chip away at the Red Raiders' 35-28 lead built early in the third period. Kalaheo took its first lead, 38-37, on Natasha Lagapa's 3-point basket with 1:10 remaining in the third quarter. Brina Fritzsche's layup at the buzzer gave the Mustangs the lead for good at 40-39.
Kalena Hatori's layup with 1:11 left in the game put Kalaheo up 50-43, and the closest Kahuku got after that was 50-47 on Lesina Funaki's 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining. Hatori's free throw with 15 seconds left sealed it.
Hatori (10 points) and Carson (11 points) each had to leave the game for a few minutes in the second half after taking hard falls.
"This was tough, Kahuku is very aggressive," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said. "Nothing came easy. But give our kids credit, they came back from being 12 down."
