Man critically injured in fall
A 43-year-old man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition yesterday after he fell from scaffolding aboard a barge at Pier 53.
Emergency medical service workers were called at 1:17 p.m. to the barge and found the man had fallen about 25 feet to the deck, an EMS spokesman said.
A team from the Kalihi fire station assisted with securing the man to a board for transport. The man is an employee of HSI Electric.
Cyclist in accident was Kalaoa man
The 52-year-old victim in a Monday bicycle accident in Kailua, Kona, died Wednesday at The Queen's Medical Center.
The city medical examiner's office has identified him as Raymond Rosenthal of Kalaoa, Kona.
Big Island police said that at 8:51 p.m. Rosenthal was riding a bicycle north on Ali'i Drive when he was struck near the one-mile marker by a boat and trailer being pulled by a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck. The truck and trailer, also heading north, were in the process of passing the bicyclist at the time.
He was taken to the Kona Community Hospital and then transferred to Queen's, where he died at 8:25 a.m. Wednesday.
Neither the 28-year-old truck driver, a Captain Cook resident, nor his 31-year-old passenger from Holualoa was injured.
Police have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy.
Sex offender remains at large
HILO, Hawai'i A former Puna man convicted of a 1994 sexual assault against a 14-year-old girl remained at large yesterday following his escape from Kulani Correctional Facility.
Shayne Kobayashi, 27, is believed to have been picked up late Wednesday morning by a woman driving a sedan that was seen near the gate of the 10,000-acre, low-security prison.
Kobayashi had been transferred from an O'ahu facility to the Big Island in late March, according to Kulani warden Peter MacDonald.
Kobayashi was sentenced to a 10-year term following his second-degree sexual assault conviction. The sentence later was reduced to five years, and then to one year with probation in exchange for his testimony in the 1999 trial of Frank Pauline Jr. for the 1991 kidnapping and murder of Dana Ireland.
Kobayashi was returned to prison in February 2001 after violating probation by testing positive for drugs, failing to undergo counseling as a sex offender and other violations.
Police advised the public not to approach Kobayashi if he is spotted. Instead, anyone with information on his whereabouts should call the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311 or CrimeStoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808) 329-8181 in Kona.
Man arrested in Kalihi holdup
Police have arrested a man on suspicion of holding up a Longs Drug Store cashier Jan. 3 at Kamehameha Shopping Center, after the female cashier identified him in a lineup.
The robbery occurred at 12:25 p.m. when a man told the 27-year-old woman to give him money and then repeated the request, showing her a gun. The cashier refused both times, stating that she needed a key to open the register.
The man then fled in a blue van on Makuahine Street. A March 14 CrimeStoppers tip helped to identify the suspect, police said.
Man charged in sex assaults
A 41-year-old Halawa man was arraigned in District Court yesterday on charges that he sexually assaulted his stepdaughter in a four-year period.
The man is being held in lieu of bail totalling $50,000 for four counts of first-degree sexual assault and 11 counts of third-degree sexual assault.
He was arrested Sunday. The incidents allegedly occurred from 1998 to this year.
14-year-old girl held in car theft
A 14-year-old Kuli'ou'ou girl was arrested on suspicion of car theft Wednesday after she allegedly stole keys to a car left in her mother's care, took the vehicle and allowed a friend to drive, causing several accidents.
A 32-year-old man had left the keys with the girl's mother, police said. The daughter allegedly took the keys Sunday, drove the car to her school campus Monday and let her friend drive it Tuesday. The friend allegedly caused three collisions and fled the scene of each accident.
The school principal reported the accidents to the mother, who called police.
