McKinley remains atop OIA East with 48-47 win

The McKinley High School girls basketball team hung onto first place last night in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division barely.
The Tigers (6-0) rallied to beat visiting Farrington, 48-47, in overtime. Amber Lee hit a five-foot turnaround jumper with four seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Tigers, who trailed by 12 points at one point.
The Governors entered the game with a 2-4 record.
"They're the best 2-5 team around," McKinley coach Jesse Victorino said. "They're our crosstown rival, and they always play us tough. They scared us."
Lee, a 6-foot-1 junior, finished with a game-high 17 points but was held scoreless through the first three periods. McKinley also had a few players sit out the first quarter for disciplinary reasons, and one guard had to leave the game with an injury.
"(The Govs) were running up and down the floor, and our guards couldn't keep up," Victorino said. "In the first half, they were out-running and out-hustling us."
Victorino said the game's fast tempo, combined with Farrington's zone defense, disrupted McKinley.
"They were pressuring our guards, and we couldn't get into our offense," Victorino said. "That's why we weren't getting the ball into Amber. That zone was killing us."
Lee finally broke through in the final period, when she scored 10 points. She scored all seven of the Tigers' points in overtime.
