• A briefing on this year's Bank of Hawai'i PARADE OF HOMES — this year with new categories for vacation ownership and a senior living category — will be held 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Ala Moana Hotel. Parade of Homes committee members will answer questions from interested developers, builders and real estate agents. Entrants who meet today's early registration deadline will receive tickets to the Oct. 11 awards ceremony, which kicks off the annual real estate showcase, planned Oct. 12-13 and Oct. 19-20. • Sophisticated technology developed initially for space and defense purposes, but with commercial and peacetime uses, will be the focus of the third NEW ALOHA ECONOMY DAY, 8 a.m. to noon at the state Capitol. Co-sponsors of the event, which is free and open to the public, include the Legislature, City Bank, Hawai'i Technology Trade Association, Hawaiian Electric Co. (HECO) and Kapolei Property Development. Events include a mini-trade show, 8 to 11 a.m., in the chamber level hallway; a 9 to 10:30 a.m. panel discussion, "Transferring Defense Technologies in Paradise," in the chamber auditorium; and a 10:30 to noon display in the rotunda of electric vehicles built by high school teams in this year's HECO Electron Marathon. FRIDAY

• Friday is the reservations deadline for the 2002 annual meeting and conference program of the HAWAI'I COUNCIL ON ECONOMIC EDUCATION, April 26 at Hilton Hawaiian Village. The conference, "The Aftermath of 9/11 in Hawai'i," is scheduled 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the hotel's South Pacific Rooms and will feature keynote speaker, Mike Fitzgerald, former director of the Washington state Department of Trade and Economic Development, and an economic development consultant. He is head of Enterprise Honolulu, a private-sector economic development organization. He will speak on "Position Hawai'i in the Global Economy," as part of the noon to 1:30 p.m. annual luncheon meeting in the hotel's Coral Ballroom. Conference topics include short-and long-term growth prospects for the local economy. Conference participants include Paul Brewbaker, Bank of Hawai'i economist; Pearl Imada-Iboshi, chief state economist; Peter Schall, Hilton Hawaiian Village executive; and Tweet Coleman, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman. • "Tongue Fu! — Martial Arts for the Mind and Mouth," with tips for dealing with difficult individuals, will be among two conflict-solving classes offered as part of the daylong session "WHY DON'T WE GET ALONG?" co-sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management and by Human Resources Solutions. Another class, "Why Can't You Be More Like Me?," will show how to make more positive use of individual differences.
