Man charged in child sex assault

A 47-year-old Kalihi man has been charged with sexual assaulting a 10-year-old girl on Kahuanui Street in Waipahu.

Nestor Arios was arraigned yesterday in District Court on charges of first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping. He is being held on $75,000 bail.

The child's mother called police March 23 when her daughter said she had been assaulted by someone she didn't know. The girl was treated at the Sex Abuse Treatment Center.

Arios was arrested after he returned to the girl's home Saturday, police said.

Police seek robber of Kalihi bank

Police are seeking a man in his 30s who fled yesterday after holding up the Kalihi branch of American Savings Bank at 1851 N. King St.

A bank worker said the robber approached a teller about 10 a.m. and showed a note saying he was armed. He took an undisclosed amount of cash.

Motorcycle officer struck by vehicle

Police have opened an attempted murder investigation after a driver struck a motorcycle police officer trying to stop the car in Wahiawa.

The car is described as a white Toyota two-door hatchback from about 1986, license FYV946. It appeared to have been sprayed, with primer and possibly maroon original paint underneath, police said.

Detectives said the 32-year-old officer, who suffered minor injuries, spotted two cars racing in Whitmore Village. He followed one car to Wahiawa and signaled it to stop, according to reports.

The driver ignored the officer's lights and siren and turned into Mango Street. When the officer followed, the Toyota rushed toward him.

To avoid being hit, the officer brought the bike to the ground, and the car ran over the front wheel, said Lt. Bill Kato.

The six-year veteran of the force was treated at Wahiawa General Hospital for injuries to both legs and released.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Ted Coons, 529-3053, or CrimeStoppers, 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellular telephone.

Military and city forensic investigators are working to identify additional remains found Friday near the Kane'ohe site where hikers found a skull a week earlier.

The remains, from the Ha'iku area, have been sent to the Office of the Medical Examiner and the Army's Central Identification Laboratory in Hawai'i, police said.

A 49-year-old man and his 27-year-old daughter came across the skull when they were hiking at about 7 p.m. April 6.
