Hawai'i team wins national basketball title for 10-under

The Hawai'i NJB All Stars recently won the 10-under division of the National Junior Basketball National Tournament in Los Angeles.

The Hawai'i team finished the tournament with a 5-0 record, beating top-seeded Capo Dana of California, 54-51, in overtime in the championship game. The Hawai'i stars trailed by as many as 14 points before staging a comeback.

Thirty-four teams competed in the 10-under division. National Junior Basketball has chapters in 11 states, including Hawai'i, California, North Carolina and Florida.

The Hawai'i NJB All Stars were coached by Stephen Chong, along with assistants Ken Nakasone and Jeff Won. Team members were: Ryan Chong, Noah Chong-Viernes, Matt Feldman, Kevin Mukai, Toshi Nakasone, Andrew Skalman, Nick Tasaka, Josh Taylor, Sampson Won and Lindsey Wong.

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

Shishido shoots 67: Pomaikai Shishido of Iolani led an assault on par at the New 'Ewa golf course yesterday in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu match .

Shishido shot a 5-under 67 — his season best by four strokes — to lead five others who were under par. They were Kamehameha's Christian Akau (69), Chris Caycayon (69) and Eric Fong (70), Punahou's Lenn Akamine (71) and Mid-Pacific's Reyn Tanaka (71).

Kamehameha shot an aggregate 280 to beat second-place Mid-Pacific by 11 strokes.

Kayla Morinaga of Sacred Hearts shot a 3-over-par 75 to win the girls competition by one stroke over Punahou's Lindsey Hong and Kimberly Tom.

Punahou shot an aggregate 234 to beat second-place Iolani by six strokes.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Hilo swept: Oregon State beat visiting Hawai'i-Hilo, 11-0, yesterday to complete a four-game series sweep.

Darren Chu and Daniel Rhodes got the only hits for Hilo, which fell to 9-34-1. Oregon State is 23-12.
