Happy Meal investigated

McDonald's corporate officials said they are still investigating a complaint of a rusty boxcutter blade found in a Happy Meal last weekend.

The complainant, Jan Poulson, said the Happy Meal was purchased Saturday at the Pearl City McDonald's.

Corporate officials have issued a statement saying they are aware of the complaint, but they were unable to confirm details.

"We are aware of the complaint, and are currently looking into the circumstances," McDonald's said in a press release. "We are taking the situation very seriously because it concerns the safety of children."

Prison to get landscaping

A partnership involving the city, state and a private organization will improve the Women's Community Correctional Center in exchange for the use of a ball field there.

The state Department of Public Safety, the city Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle will kick off the long-term landscape project this morning at 9 a.m. by planting a monkeypod tree and four shower trees in front of the Olomana Dormitory at the women's center in Kailua.

Muriel Flanders, of Honolulu, donated money to the Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle to purchase the monkeypod.

The city parks department will provide the shower trees, 400 hibiscus plants and an irrigation system for the hibiscus in exchange for the use of a ball field on Kalaniana'ole Highway outside the women's facility.

The inmates will plant the hibiscus and care for the landscape.

'A'ala Park plan to be discussed

A proposal to keep parts of 'A'ala Park open until 9 p.m. will be discussed at the Kalihi-Palama Neighborhood Board meeting at 7 p.m. today at Kapalama Elementary School.

The city has spent $2.3 million to renovate 'A'ala Park, which has been a haven for illegal activities for decades, but the Weed & Seed crime-fighting program and a two-year closure for repair work moved out loiterers and cleared the way for the community to reclaim the area.

The board will discuss a plan to allow just the skateboard rink, the basketball court and the play equipment area to remain open two hours past the present closing time.

The board will also try to fill three vacancies.
