Movie Openings

"Dead or Alive": Cult-fave director Takashi Miike's 1999 film is a genre-bending, shoot-'em-up cops-and-gangsters tale that takes place in the crime-riddled Shinjuku ward of Tokyo. In Japanese, with English subtitles. Opens tomorrow at Restaurant Row Theatres. (Not rated, but has extreme violence and adult material.)

"Festival at Cannes": A comic fantasy that takes place during the famous film festival. A film icon (Anouk Aimee) must choose between a meaty role in a small film or a meaningless role in a high-profile film; and then there are the many twists and turns by those all around her. Opens tomorrow at Restaurant Row Theatres. (PG-13)

"Murder By Numbers": Sandra Bullock is a cop assigned to a grisly murder. Clues seem to point to an obvious suspect, and that's good enough for her partner (Ben Chaplin). But she's intrigued by two brainy high-school kids (Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt), who seem to be daring her to notice them. Opens tomorrow at Dole Cannery 18 Theatres, Restaurant Row Theatres, Ward Stadium 16-Plex, Waikiki 3-Plex, Kahala 8-Plex, Koko Marina 8-Plex, Pearl Highlands 12, Pearlridge West 16-Plex, Kapolei 16-Plex, Mililani 14-Plex, Ko'olau 10-Plex, Keolu Center Cinemas, Windward 10, Coconut Marketplace Cinemas (Kaua'i), Prince Kuhio Stadium Cinemas (Big Island), Makalapua Cinemas (Big Island), Keauhou 7-Plex (Big Island), Kaahumanu 6-Plex (Maui), Kukui Mall 4-Plex (Maui), Lahaina Cinemas (Maui). (R).

"Pinero": Benjamin Bratt stars in the title role as the poet-playwright-junkie-actor Miguel Pinero, who became a cultural icon among New York City's Puerto Rican community. Opens tomorrow at Restaurant Row Theatres. (R)

"The Scorpion King": Wrestling hero The Rock stars in a prequel of sorts to "The Mummy Returns." The Rock, who has Hawai'i connections, plays a Conan-like warrior whose aim is to defeat the evil Scorpion King. Also starring Hawai'i's Kelly Hu.
