Mural ceremony at Kalihi school
The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts will hold a dedication ceremony of a ceramic tile mural at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Kalihi Uka Elementary School.
The sculpture by artist Mark Kadota is titled "Kapukawaiokalihi" (The water door of Kalihi) and was inspired by the ancient Hawaiian legend of Kane and Kanaloa's journey into Kalihi Valley.
According to the legend, they discovered fine 'awa roots growing, but no water to prepare the 'awa. Kane took his staff and stuck it into the earth, revealing a larger hole out of which a pool of water flowed. The pool of fresh water became known as Kapukawaiokalihi.
Kadota has lived in Hawai'i since 1971 and his works can be found in museums throughout the world.
