Speech League state champions going on to U.S. tourney

Fourteen high school student winners of the state championship Hawaii Speech League competition last weekend are eligible to go to the national tournament in Charlotte, N.C., June 16-21.

This year's state winners include (with asterisk indicating those going on to the national tournament):

  • Storytelling — first place, Julia Ogilvie, University Lab School; second place, Keoni Mahelona, Kamehameha High School.
  • Program Reading — first, Mai Jones, Kamehameha High School; second, LiAnne Dela Vega, McKinley High School.
  • Humorous Interpretation — first, Paolo Panila*, Baldwin High School; second, Keoni Mahelona, Kamehameha High School.
  • Dramatic Interpretation — first, Danielle Bishaw*, Kamehameha High School; second, Rockne Henriques*, Kamehameha High School.
  • Duo Interpretation — first, Oscar Loui* and Andrew Lum*, McKinley High School; second, Rockne Henriques* and Desiree Koanui*, Kamehameha High School.
  • Fely Serra Original Oratory — first, Currun Singh*, Punahou; second, Joni Sasaki*, University Lab School.
  • Impromptu Speaking — first, Sarah Damerville, Iolani; second, Dexter Bacon, Kahuku High School.
  • Myrna Ishimoto U.S. Extemporaneous — first, Eric Hananoki*, Iolani; second, Jennifer Fitzgerald*, Kamehameha High School.
  • Lynn Levinson Foreign Extemporaneous — first, William Henry Kekoa McClellan*, Kamehameha High School; second, Cory Nomura, Iolani.
  • Spontaneous Argumentation — first, William Henry Kekoa McClellan, Kamehameha High School; second, Leonie Leduc, Punahou.
  • Misao Kubota Varsity Debate — first, Adriana Alghussein* and Jessica Savini*, Kahuku High School; second, Justin Murakami* and Jennifer Saito*, Iolani.
  • Junior Varsity Debate — first, Marisa Kirio and Justin Van Etten, Iolani; second, Stephen McCall and Jessica Yang, Iolani.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debate — first, Currun Singh*, Punahou; second, Daniel Lee*, Kamehameha High School.

Only certain categories are eligible for the national competition, but in some cases first-place and second-place winners are both eligible.

  • Interpretative Events Sweepstakes — Kamehameha High School.
  • Original Events Sweepstakes — Kamehameha High School.
  • Sheraton Debate Sweepstakes — Iolani.
  • Championship Sweepstakes — Kamehameha High School.
  • NFL Tournament Trophy — Kamehameha High School.
  • NFL Tournament Plaque — Kamehameha High School.
  • Governor's Spirit Trophy — Baldwin High School.
  • Lt. Governor's Trophy — Sacred Hearts Academy Intermediate School.
