'Sunset' moves to Waipahu

The city's popular "Sunset on the Beach" is heading inland to Waipahu tomorrow and Sunday.

The free event, renamed "Waipahu Sunset in the Park," will run at Hawaii's Plantation Village from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both days.

An open market will open each day at 11 a.m. showcasing community products, services, art and crafts. Radio station KINE at 5 p.m. will feature fun contests and local bands, followed by a 7 p.m. movie. The James Bond flick "The World Is Not Enough" is slated for tomorrow and Kevin Costner's "Field of Dreams" for Sunday. Fourteen Waipahu restaurants will offer a variety of menu items.

Because of limited parking, the city will provide free shuttle service from Leeward YMCA, Hans L'Orange Park, St. Francis Medical Center-West, Waipahu Shopping Plaza, Westgate Center, Waipahu Shopping Center, Daiei Waipahu, Waipahu Town Center, Village Park Park & Ride, Waikele Center, and Gentry Waipio Shopping Center.

The city will close off Waipahu Street from Waipahu Depot Road to Awamoi Street from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on both days.


HONOLULU

HPU team takes regionals

A team from Hawai'i Pacific University has won the Students in Free Enterprise regional competition in Waikiki and will compete at the national competition May 12-14 in Kansas City, Mo.

The HPU team took the regional title on April 12 with a winning 24-minute presentation on the results of the team's education outreach programs. It was the second time in two years the HPU team has advanced to the nationals. SIFE is a nonprofit organization that aims to develop student leadership.


WINDWARD

Waimanalo holds book events

Storytelling, local entertainment and a free book for every child will be part of Explore Waimanalo Library Day, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the facility, 41-1320 Kalanianaole Highway. The program is free and open to the public.

At the same time, the Friends of Waimanalo Library will conduct its semi-annual book sale. The sale continues from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday at the library.

Project help needed at marsh

Scientific research and a revegetation project will take place at Kawai Nui Marsh tomorrow, and volunteers are needed to help with the efforts. The revegetation project commemorating Earth Day will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine.

At 1 p.m. participants will join Hawai'i Pacific University professor Joe Moye and his students to take core samples in the marsh. The samples will help determine geological history and sedimentary deposits of the marsh. 'Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahi is sponsoring the projects.
