Lee shoots 65 to lead Mid-Pacific

Regan Lee fired a 7-under-par 65 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead over Casey Nakama after the first round of the Mid-Pacific Open at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Ed Tischler was at 67, followed by Hirokazu Hagiwara (68), Brian Sasada (68) and Beau Yokomoto (69).

Defending champion Larry Stubblefield opened with a 70 and was tied with Glen Tamagawa, Shinsuke Yanagisawa, Kevin Hayashi, Dean Dorothy II and amateur Mark West.

The second round will be played today with the field in all flights cut for the final two rounds.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

UH-Hilo beats Pacific: University of Hawai'i-Hilo's Jason Castro hurled a five hitter with seven strikeouts in a 9-1 victory over Pacific yesterday at Stockton, Calif.

The Vulcans (10-35-1) closed the door on any Tiger (18-16-1) comeback, scoring five runs in the ninth.

BOXING

Ex-Olympian on Viloria card: Waipahu's Brian Viloria will be joined on the May 17th Blaisdell Center boxing card by former U.S. Olympic teammate Jose Navarro, it was announced yesterday.

Navarro, who is 10-0 with four knockouts, will meet an as yet unnamed opponent in a scheduled eight-round junior bantamweight bout. Both Viloria, who meets Sandro Oviedo in an eight-round flyweight bout, and Navarro were on the U.S. team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Tickets for the seven-bout card go on sale at the Blaisdell Center box office and Ticket Plus outlets beginning today.

SWIMMING

Neunzig dies: Bill Neunzig, one of coach Soichi Sakamoto's "Ditch Boys" after an All-American career at Ohio State, died on April 3 in Florida. He was 85.

Neunzig moved to Hawai'i to train with coach Sakamoto on Maui after earning an All-America designation in the 150-yard backstroke at Ohio State in 1937 and '38. He later moved to Honolulu, where his daughters, Lani Hearn and Jackie Scott, still reside.

Sakamoto was world-famous for training swimmers in irrigation ditches on Maui.
