Coast Guard finds drifting tanker, dog

Advertiser Staff

The Coast Guard in Honolulu said tonight that one of its aircraft had found the missing Indonesian tanker Insiko 1907 and that Forgea, the dog left aboard the vessel, is alive and appears to be well.

The vessel on March 13 suffered a fire at sea that killed one crewmember and injured another.

After drifting for weeks, the crew was rescued by a Norwegian cruise ship on April 2. Since then the ship, which was gutted by the fire and drifting at sea some 400 miles south of O'ahu, had been given up for lost.

The Coast Guard launched another search becaused it feared the tanker might run aground on Johnston Atoll. A C-130 aircraft spotted the tanker today and saw the dog running about on the deck. The crew dropped food to the dog, including pizza, oranges and other items.

The Hawaiian Humane Society had launched a $50,000 sea-and-air mission to find the dog that drew national attention.
