Fire last night gutted an 11th-floor apartment and forced the evacuation of The Alexander condominiums at 1505 Alexander St. in Makiki, across from Punahou School.

A woman needed assistance in getting out of the building when fire broke out in The Alexander condominiums last night. The fire gutted one unit, and forced the evacuation of the building.

There were no injuries.

The fire began about 9:35 p.m. in apartment No. 1105. The fire was under control shortly after 10 p.m. and extinguished shortly after that, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.

No one was in the unit at the time of the fire. The occupants, a 45-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son, arrived to find firefighters outside the building.

Soo said the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen. The woman told firefighters that she might have left something cooking on the stove.

The building was not equipped with sprinklers, which are required only in hotels and commercial buildings.

The Red Cross was helping the woman and her son with emergency accommodations.

Alexander Street last night was blocked off from Wilder Avenue to the H-1 Freeway.
