A hula lecture and demonstration, "Poetic Hula of the Kalakaua Period," promises to bring together two attributes that aren't always combined: makamae (precious) and manuahi (free).
Kumu hula Kimo Keaulana and Na Mea Hula of the Lei Hulu Hula School will present the demonstration at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kamakakuo-kalani-Gladys K. 'Ainoa Brandt Center for Hawaiian Studies, Halau O Haumea, 2645 Dole St.
The event will employ the methods of Tutu Mary Kawena Pukui, and it is performed in her spirit, using poetic devices and ordering pieces within the structure of a formal hula program. The program honors Gladys Brandt.
"Poetic Hula of the Kalakaua Period" is sponsored by the UH Committee for the Preservation and Study of Hawaiian Language, Art and Culture; the Center for Hawaiian Studies; and the UH Hawaiian Language Program.
