Maui ISP offers 3G technology

A new company is preparing to launch the nation's first 3G — or "third generation'' — broadband Internet service on Maui this summer.

Maui Sky Fiber held an open house yesterday at the Maui Research & Technology Center to demonstrate how the system works.

Using a palm-sized, wireless modem, Maui residents, businesses and hotel guests will be able to access the Internet at high-speed throughout much of Maui, including areas currently unable to get broadband Internet connectivity, as well as some offshore areas.

The 3G technology is being touted as fast, portable and affordable, with monthly service plans starting at $29.95. Services include residential and business, hotel and resort, and public agency and secure private networks.
