Kaua'i to begin work on judiciary building

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The state hopes to break ground next year on a new six-courtroom building for the judiciary on Kaua'i.

The three-story structure will bring all judiciary functions back under one roof, including Family Court, District Court, Circuit Court and related functions such as probation and parole offices. It also will have holding cells, conference rooms and a law library.

The offices have been scattered around Lihu'e because of a lack of space in the old courthouse building.

The Kaua'i Judiciary Complex will be off Kapule Highway, next to the new county police building, which is under construction.

It will cover 6.5 acres; the building will have 112,000 square feet of space.

The state Department of Accounting and General Services has issued an environmental assessment that finds no significant impact for the project.
