Season closing on lobsters

Advertiser Staff

Anglers will not be permitted to take spiny lobsters, slipper lobsters and Kona crabs during a four-month breeding and conservation period starting in May, the Department of Land and Natural Resources said.

The closed summer season will start at midnight May 1 and end at midnight Aug. 31.

For the rest of the year, it is illegal to take any lobster or Kona crab that has eggs.

The land department said lobsters and crabs lay most of their eggs during the summer, but many have been found with eggs during May.

Persons who violate the closure are subject to arrest and fine of up to $1,000 and up to 30 days in jail per specimen taken. In addition, civil penalties may apply, including repayment for all costs associated with the arrest and prosecution, and possible forfeiture of all gear, including boats.

Anyone who knows about a violation may call the 24-hour hotline on O'ahu at 587-0077. Neighbor Islanders can call toll-free by calling the operator and asking for "Enterprise 5469."
