New restrooms ready at Pa'ia

PA'IA, Maui — New restrooms at Lower Pa'ia Park are to be dedicated by county officials at 10 this morning.

The project cost $184,000 and included demolition of an old restroom building and construction of showers.

Along with bodysurfers, beachgoers and basketball players who use the single outdoor court there, the park is the ending point for downhill Haleakala bike tours.


Upcountry gets new fire truck

MAKAWAO, Maui — The Maui Department of Fire Control has a new $385,000 engine pumper truck.

The Pierce truck can hold 750 gallons of water and has been assigned to the Upcountry region. It replaced a 1988 pumper truck that will be used as a backup. The new vehicle is the second of eight fire truck purchases Maui County is making this year.

Schools compete in Solar Sprint

KEALAKEHE, Hawai'i — Fourteen high school and middle school teams from across the state will participate in the 3rd Sun Power for Schools Solar Sprint beginning at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Kealakehe High School tennis courts.

A total of 134 students are involved in the event, which is sponsored by Hawai'i Electric Light Co. to encourage use of solar energy.

The model cars were designed and built from a project kit that consists of a motor and a small solar panel.
