UH golfers in last at WAC Championship

The University of Hawai'i is in last place after the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship yesterday at Sparks, Nev.

Tulsa leads the seven-team tournament with a 284. San Jose State (299) is second and Nevada (309) is third. Hawai'i is at 324.

The Golden Hurricane has the tournament's top four individuals, including Stacy Prammanasudh, who leads with a 69.

The Rainbows' top golfer is Melanie Matsumura, who is in a six-way tie for 13th at 77.

BOXING

Salud to fight in Oklahoma: Jesus Salud, "The Hawaiian Punch," will face 1996 Olympian Zahir Raheem in a 10-round featherweight (126 pounds) bout Saturday at Oklahoma City.

The co-main event will be televised on Showtime.

Salud, a former WBA world champion from Nanakuli, is currently the director of community relations for the Hawaiian Islanders of arenafootball2.

Raheem, of Philadelphia, is the current NABA featherweight champion.

SAILING

UH Wahine advance: The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine sailing team advanced to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's North American Championship after placing second at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Women's District Championship this past weekend.

Stanford won the regatta, but UH's Jennifer Warnock was voted regatta MVP.

The Rainbow Wahine, ranked fifth in the Sailing World magazine college poll, will play host to the North American Championships, May 29-31, at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

VOLLEYBALL

Berg the best: Minnesota Chill setter Lindsey Berg of Honolulu yesterday was named Outstanding Server for the inaugural season of United States Professional Volleyball.

Berg averaged a league-best 2.1 aces per match for the regular-season champion Chill. Berg, whose jump serve has been clocked at 57 mph, served four aces in a match twice and has had at least one in 18 of 20 matches, including playoffs.

She is a graduate of Punahou School (1998) and the University of Minnesota (2001).

Minnesota plays Grand Rapids tomorrow in the deciding match of a best-of-3 semifinal series.

Hawai'i-Stanford match: The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team will play defending national champion Stanford in an exhibition match at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Tickets are $7 (adults), $6 (senior citizens), $4 (students), and a limited number of courtside seats are available for $20. Tickets can be purchased at the Stan Sheriff Center box office and UH Campus Center.

ULTIMATE FIGHTING

Super Brawl 24: Hilo's Wes "Cabbage" Coreirra will represent Hawai'i in Super Brawl 24: Return of the Heavyweights.

The two-day, 16-fighter tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at the Blaisdell Arena. The first match will start at 7:30 both nights.

Coreirra, a 6-foot-2, 291-pounder fighting out of Grappling Unlimited, is 12-3 in no-holds barred competition.

This year's champion will have to win four bouts.

AWARDS BANQUET

UH Wahine's greatest: The University of Hawai'i's greatest Rainbow Wahine athletes will be honored May 2 during the 30th Anniversary Rainbow Wahine Celebration Dinner at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom.

Each of the 12 Wahine sports will recognize an athlete, with volleyball honoring three.

Money raised through the sales of tables and individual tickets will help establish the Women's Athletics Scholarship Endowment.
