PEOPLE IN PARADISE: Ensconced at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hawaii hotel for 10 days, producer-writer Glen Larson worked on his movie script for the upcoming "Knight Rider" caper starring David Hasselhoff and his talking car, KITT. "Glen wrote the original 'Knight Rider' TV script at the old Kahala Hilton, so he figured he'd do the movie one here," said pal Tom Moffatt, with whom Larson had dinner one night. Jimmy Borges also dined and talked old times with Larson, a former Four Preps singer ...

Borges joined the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and pops conductor Matt Catingub for a Hawai'i Executives conference in Kailua, Kona, where they performed classics, some vintage Frank Sinatra and some movie themes ...

NAMES 'N' PLACES: Comedian Mel Cabang, performing with the Makaha Sons at today's Secretary's Day luncheon at the Renaissance Ilikai Hotel, says that his run-ins with the law have had a positive side (he was imprisoned for gambling and tax evasion). Folks in law and law enforcement are good-naturedly checking him out and supporting his work while out on parole. "We have 85 people coming from the state attorney general's office, 40 from the federal attorney general, 65 from HPD, two tables from the IRS and 50 from the DOE," said Cabang ...

The Society of Seven got a standing ovation when they did "God Bless the USA" on the Perry & Price show, broadcasting live from the California Hotel in Las Vegas Saturday. They're now at the Golden Nugget for a three-month run. Meanwhile, back home in Waikiki, the Society of Seven Las Vegas is back at the Outrigger Waikiki's Main Showroom, where Johnny Fernandez, Jonathan Kaina and Glen Miyashiro are again donning masks and cloaks for the reinstated "Phantom of the Opera" finale. And that was Fernandez guesting with Eddie Sherman on the latter's new KUMU Radio show, 9 to 10 a.m. Sundays ...

Willie Martinez, a ranking Latin-sala trumpeter from Miami, sat in with Rolando Sanchez & Salsa Hawaii at their "Vamos a Bailar Salsa" Saturday night at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Campus Center Ballroom. Martinez has performed with the likes of Tito Puente, Celia Cruz (due here this summer) and Marc Anthony ...

NIGHT LIFE: Keyboardist Kit Samson, recovering from triple bypass heart surgery, returns to his Ala Moana Hotel Mahina Lounge slot on May Day — 18 pounds leaner. "I need to get my weight back, and I'm watching my diet and doing some walking to get back my strength," he said. Samson will perform 7-10 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; Paul Conrad filled in during Samson's absence ...

Jamarama Productions' "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" was a joyful treat last weekend at Hawai'i Theatre. While the adults (Shannon Nakano, Kala'i Stern, Matthew Pedersen, Dion Donahue, Andrew Sakaguchi, Juan Carlos Rivas, Stephanie Sanchez, John Bryan, Jodi Leong) carried out the vocal leads, the children clearly were the hit — young, bright voices, accompanied by cheerful smiles and representing a technicolor ripple of races ...
