Rep. Cynthia Thielen took a short spin at the State Capitol in Kalaheo High School's electric car, the "Mustang," one of several experimental vehicles designed and built by Hawai'i students. Thielen, R-24th (Kailua, Kane'ohe Bay), tested the car as the Legislature observed "Dual Use Day" with activities promoting government and business "new collaborative opportunities" to spur economic growth.

Saint Louis and Kalaheo students received a lesson in bon dancing as part of the Japan Day program by the Japan-America Society of Hawaii. About 150 students, including some from St. Andrew's Priory, participated in the event at Hawaii Tokai International College, which also included a tea ceremony.

Jana Sherman greeted Matthew Wright warmly when the USS Russell returned to Pearl Harbor. Sailors on the destroyer, which left Pearl Harbor on Oct. 25, assisted in a search operation in the Indian Ocean just before Christmas and rescued the crew of a downed B-1 bomber involved in the war in Afghanistan.
