McKinley clinches OIA East title, 40-25

The McKinley High School girls basketball team won its first O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division championship since 1997 last night after defeating injury-plagued Moanalua, 40-25.
The host Tigers (9-1) thus earn the East's No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the OIA tournament which begins May 3. McKinley could have clinched the division title Tuesday, but was upset by Kalani, 47-38.
"The East is really hard, every game is tough," said McKinley junior center Amber Lee, who finished with a game-high 10 points. "That's why this is awesome, because of all the obstacles we had to overcome. We knew (the title) was not going to come to us on a silver platter."
Last night's victory, on "Senior Night" at McKinley Gym, was no exception.
Moanalua (7-3) jumped out to a 15-7 lead early in the second period before the Tigers went on an 11-0 run to lead 18-15 at intermission. The key play of the game, however, came just before the halftime buzzer, when Menehune point guard Patti Hardimon went down with a sprained left ankle.
Hardimon, Moanalua's best offensive weapon, had seven points when she was injured. She did not return in the second half.
Her injury is the latest of several suffered by the Menehune, who started the season with 14 players but are now down to seven.
"It's tough, but what are we going to do?" Moanalua coach Roy Dias said. "All we want is a shot in the playoffs, that's it. So hopefully we'll get some of those injured players back."
Last night, Hardimon's injury basically took the life out of the Menehune offense, which scored all 10 of its second-half points from the free-throw line. McKinley took control in the third period by outscoring Moanalua 13-5 to take a 31-20 lead.
The victory capped a rough two weeks for the Tigers, who were pushed to overtime in a victory over Farrington, squeaked past Kahuku 42-41, and knocked off by Kalani during that time.
"Great teams bounce back, and that's what our girls did tonight," Tigers coach Jesse Victorino said. "It's been a roller-coaster ride, and a lot of people were saying that McKinley is barely winning. Well that's true, because with a seven-point differential we could be 5-4. But the fact is we're 9-1, because these girls keep pulling it out. It shows their character."
Regarding the OIA, as Dias said, "it's not over yet."
Lee agreed.
"I think we'll celebrate this for just a moment, and then we'll start getting ready for our next game," she said.
