The Gerbode Foundation recently announced the results of the 2001 Visual Arts Awards. Seventy-eight artists were nominated by arts professionals in the Bay Area and Hawai'i. Each nominator was asked to name four to five "emerging artists" working in any medium. Curators from the designated museums, including the Honolulu Academy of Arts and The Contemporary Museum, met in October to review slides and videos.
The Hawai'i-based recipients of this prestigious award are Gaye Chan, Darius Homay, Sanit Khewhok, Kapulani Landgraf, Katherine Love, Deborah Nehmad, Esther Shimazu and Yida Wang. Each museum received $40,000 to purchase artworks directly from the artists, with no more than $10,000 to be spent on a single piece.
