Wilson wins Japan tournament

University of Hawai‘i football player Sean Butts, center, won the annual “Hawai‘i’s Fastest Human” 100-meter dash yesterday during the Punahou Relays at Punahou School. Butts finished in 10.84 seconds, ahead of Kelsey Nakanelua (11.05) and Chad Miyamoto (11.06). At left is Miyamoto. Daniel Inferrera, who finished fourth (11.09), is at right.

Kane'ohe's Dean Wilson shot a 3-under-par 68 to finish at 11-under 273 and win the Tsuruya Open at the Sports Shinko Country Club in Hyogo, Japan, today.

Wilson, who took the lead after the third round, had six birdies (and three bogeys) to win by two strokes over Japan's Toru Taniguchi, who shot a 67.

It was Wilson's fourth Japan victory. He won three times last year on the Japan PGA Tour, which is now the Japan Golf Tour. Wilson has earned about $176,000 in three tournaments this season.


MORE GOLF

• Seki wins Pac-10: Jim Seki, the 1998 Hawai'i high school champion, won the Pacific-10 championship yesterday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.

Seki, a Stanford junior, shared the lead going into the final round. He birdied the final two holes to earn medalist honors.

Seki chipped in from atop a greenside mound on the final hole to post a final-round 74 and hold off USC's Kevin Stadler and teammate Philip Rowe for a one-stroke win at 4-under 284. Seki opened with a 66 and held at least a share of the lead after each round.

USC won the Pac-10 title by 15 shots over Stanford (1,441).


WATER POLO

• UH to play for 7th: Cara Chlebicki scored two goals to lift California to a 6-4 victory over the University of Hawai'i water polo team yesterday at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at Los Angeles.

UH (14-14) plays San Jose State for seventh place today. No. 1 Stanford and No. 3 UCLA play for the MPSF title today and the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Championships.

Chelsea Garner-Prohs had two goals for Hawai'i.


SOFTBALL

• UH splits doubleheader: Trisha Ramos drove in both Hawai'i runs in a 2-1 victory over Portland State and a split of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Portland, Ore., yesterday.

In the first game, Vanessa Applegate singled in Kari Mills in the bottom of the seventh to give Portland a 3-2 victory.

In the second game, Ramos singled in Kate Judd, who had singled with two out, for the Rainbow Wahine in the first inning. Ramos then hit a sacrifice fly to score Stacie Hirano, who led off with a single in the third inning. Portland scored its run in the fourth inning.

Portland out-hit Hawai'i 11-7, but left nine runners on base.

Hawai'i is 31-21 overall, 12-6 in the WAC. Portland State is 18-29 and 7-9.

• Chaminade, HPU split: Donnell Wittekind pitched an 11-hit shutout to lift Chaminade to a 2-0 victory in the second game and a split of a doubleheader with Hawai'i Pacific yesterday at HPU Windward field.

Milonne Chapman drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift HPU to a 3-2 victory in the opener.

HPU is 21-21, Chaminade 26-23.


QUARTERBACK CLUB

• UH track on tap: Carmen James, University of Hawai'i track coach, will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Also scheduled to speak are Hervy Kurisu, state commissioner for Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken baseball; Dana Dias, athletic director, Moanalua High School; and Daniel Arakaki, UH recruitment compliance coordinator.


TRACK AND FIELD

• UH runners win two events: University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine senior Casey McGuire-Turcotte won the 3,000-meter run and teammate Alethe West won the 5,000-meter run at the UC San Diego Open at La Jolla, Calif.

McGuire-Turcotte surpassed her personal best in 10 minutes, 1.51 seconds. West won in 17:41.49.
