Marine base allowing fishing

Marine Corps Base Hawai'i at Kane'ohe is accepting applications from civilians to fish on the military installation.

Applicants will be subject to a limited background check and must attend an orientation class about fishing rules and locations, said Maj. Chris Hughes, with the base public affairs office. About 200 permits will be issued quarterly.

Civilian fishing and other activities were suspended after Sept. 11 when security was tightened at all military installations, Hughes said. The base has been reassessing security.

Applications may be picked up at the pass and ID office at the main gate off H-3.
