Girl, 7, injured by burial in sand

A 7-year-old Maui girl was in critical condition yesterday after being accidentally buried under three feet of sand on Saturday.

Police said they were called to Hamoa Beach in Hana at 6:15 p.m. for a child who was not breathing.

Firefighters performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

They said the girl and several other children had dug a tunnel in the sand and it collapsed while she was inside.

She was taken by ambulance to Hana Medical Center and later flown to Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children.

A nursing supervisor said the girl remained in the intensive care unit in critical condition yesterday.
