UH softball splits with Portland St.

Shannon Tabion pitched a five-hitter with three walks and two strikeouts as the University of Hawai'i beat Portland State, 5-1, yesterday to earn a split of a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader yesterday at Portland, Ore.

The Rainbow Wahine's Trisha Ramos batted 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs, and Stacey Porter hit a solo homer.

In the first game, Morgan Seibert pitched a four-hitter as Portland State beat Hawai'i, 3-0.

The Rainbows are 32-22 overall and 13-7 in the WAC. The Vikings are 19-30 and 8-10.

Hawai'i will play a doubleheader at Oregon today.

VOLLEYBALL

• Berg honored again: Honolulu's Lindsey Berg received her second major post-season honor from United States Professional Volleyball.

Berg was named the Outstanding Setter for the inaugural season of the Midwest-based league. Last week, she was named Outstanding Server.

Berg led the league with 11.4 assists per game in 18 regular-season matches.

Berg is a 1998 Punahou School graduate and was a three-time first-team All-Midwest Region setter at Minnesota.

SAILING

• UH coed team wins: The 12th-ranked University of Hawai'i coed sailing team won the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Dinghy District Championship yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Hawai'i finished with 94 points, and was followed by Stanford (125) and UC Santa Barbara (133).

Hawai'i and Stanford qualified for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association/Gill Dinghy North American Championship, May 27 to June 7, at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

GOLF

• Ordway honored: Kathy Ordway is the 2002 Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Honor Roll recipient.

Ordway has served as the HSWGA's president, secretary, treasurer, course rating chair and Stroke Play chair. As its computer intern, she compiles records and has developed an HSWGA Website.

Ordway is a member of Mid-Pacific Country Club and volunteers for LPGA and PGA Tour events as well as junior and University of Hawai'i tournaments.

Previously named to the honor roll: Kahili Chong, Norma Baxter, Helen Higa, Bev Kim, Wilma Vorfeld, Barbara Dowd, Betty Roth and Nita Howell.

WATER POLO

• UH Wahine eighth: The University of Hawai'i water polo team ended its season yesterday, falling to San Diego State, 9-8, in the seventh-place match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at Los Angeles.

Karin van Hoff and Chelsea Garner-Prohs led the Wahine (14-15) with two goals apiece.

SURFING

• Bartels wins: Melanie Bartels of Wai'anae won the women's division of the Foster's Cup Saturday at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif.

Bartels, 19, received $2,000 for the victory. Fellow Hawai'i surfer Yvette Bertelmann placed third.
