WASHINGTON The Senate unanimously approved the nomination of Adm. Thomas Fargo as commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Command late yesterday, allowing his already-scheduled promotion ceremony to proceed this week. The command transfer ceremony is set for 4 p.m. Thursday at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i at Kane'ohe. Fargo succeeds Adm. Dennis Blair.
The nomination of Vice Adm. Walter Doran to succeed Fargo as commander of the Pacific Fleet has not been approved by the Senate.
Fargo's appointment was expected to sail through the Senate as his performance drew only plaudits from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle at a hearing last week in the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Fargo, 53, and his wife, Sarah, have two sons, Thomas Jr., 29, and William, 15.
A 1970 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Fargo rose through the ranks, including a brief 1982 stint as commander of the Pacific Fleet's Submarine Force at Pearl Harbor, until he was named commander of the Pacific Fleet in October 1999.
