Two Hawai'i wrestlers place fourth in nationals

Two wrestlers from Hawai'i took fourth places Saturday night in USA Wrestling's National Championships at Las Vegas.

Grant Nakamura, an Iowa State freshman from Wailuku, placed fourth in the men's freestyle 121-pound division. Nakamura was a state champion for Baldwin High last year.

Clarissa Chun of Kapolei, a member of the U.S. national team, placed fourth in the women's 105.5-pound division. Chun, a 1999 Roosevelt High graduate, lost the bronze medal to a Marine Corps wrestler, 3-1.

In the men's Veterans tournament for older wrestlers, Arthur McEntire of Kapolei placed third in the 127.8-pound division.

Others from Hawai'i who placed in the Women's National Championships:

Katie Kunimoto of Kane'ohe (Castle High '99), fifth at 112 pounds, Jill Remiticado of 'Aiea (Iolani '99), sixth at 121 pounds.

Kristin Fujioka of Kane'ohe (Castle '01), eighth at 105.5 pounds.

Stephanie Bolton of 'Ewa Beach (Radford '00), eighth at 147.5 pounds.

Kunimoto, Remiticado and Fujioka all wrestle for Pacific University in Oregon; Chun for Missouri Valley College and Bolton for Cumberland, Tenn., College. McEntire wrestles for the Hawai'i Wildcats.

COLLEGE COMMITMENT

Turbin going to Occidental: Derek Turbin of Punahou, voted Outstanding Male Performer at Saturday's Punahou Relays track and field meet, will attend Occidental College in Los Angeles.

Turbin, who is 6 feet 3 and 200 pounds, will play football and compete in track and field, Doris Sullivan of Hawaii Sports Network said in making the announcement.

He is defending state champion in the triple jump (45-1 1/2) and was a second-team all-star defensive lineman in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu last football season.
