Origami artist creates tiny horses in bottles

It takes deft fingers to create this miniature origami horse, which is shorter than Kevin Sanada's eye lashes. Crafter Mary Shota of Kane'ohe folded two Ñ-inch squares of gold origami paper 70 times to create each of the 250 limited-edition horses. Each horse is encased in a one-inch glass bottle adorned with a charm. A decorative string is attached so you can hang it on a handbag, backpack or rear-view window.

Shota said the charm, honoring the Year of the Horse, is meant to bring a speedy recovery from illness or economic woes. Not available in shops, the horse sells for $35 online at www.shocreations.net or by phoning Sho Creations at 236-7025.

Gross is groovy, according to Myers

Is "Austin Powers in Goldmember" a gross-out fest? Why, yes: Star Mike Myers loves jokes about projectile vomiting, urinating, flatulating, etc., whether you like it or not.

Co-star Michael York likes it. "There's all this psychobabble talk these days about the inner child," he says. "But the inner child for most of us is this horrid, snotty-nosed little urchin."

Myers admittedly can't resist. "I don't know what to say about the concept of 'going too far,' " he says. "I love what Lenny Bruce had to say at his obscenity trials. He said they were a sham, not necessarily on any libertarian grounds, but because you can't legislate things like that. You don't need a government to tell you when you've gone too far."

Grumpy's introduces DJ lineup, new menu

Soul food and music for the soul can now be found in good supply at the Kaka'ako restaurant and nightclub Grumpy's. The owners have renovated the eatery and revamped its menu and after-hours offerings.

In addition to a new menu designed by Mom's Soul Food's Ida Pepper, Grumpy's now features seven nights of DJ events each week: "Mind Tactic Mondays" with Jimmy Taco, Mondays; "Old School O.G. Movie Nite," Tuesdays; "Sessions" with Nocturnal Sound Krew, Wednesdays; "Sweetness" with Stone Groove Family, Thursdays; "Bliss" with 2Tight and Eminent Entertainment, Fridays; "Rub-a-Dub" with Empire Sound, Saturdays; and Groovology's downtempo on Sundays. Events run from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., except for "O.G. Movie Nite," from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Groovology, from 5 to 10 p.m.

Grumpy's is across from CompUSA at 327 Keawe St.; 528-4911.

Conference focuses on careers in health

The end of summer may spark the beginning of career dreams for young women attending The Fifth Annual Economic Summit for Girls: A Summer Health Splash this week at Sacred Hearts Academy in Kaimuki. About 30 attendees will learn about medical career opportunities and the importance of health care in Hawai'i's economy.
