By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Editor

CLOSE UP: Actor Danny Glover, star of a bounty of films including "The Lethal Weapon" series, "The Color Purple," "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Angels in the Outfield," will be in Hawai'i tomorrow to speak on anemia at a National Medical Association gathering at the Hawai'i Convention Center. (The event is not open to the public.) Glover's father suffered from the problem. For information on anemia, see www.anemia.com or phone the Anemia LifeLine at (888) 722-4407. ...

Bobby Silva Jr., a 1995 Mid-Pacific Institute graduate and a member of the 2000 class at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, will appear shortly in NBC-TV's summer series, "Meet My Folks." The air date could be Aug. 21. If you look carefully, you'll find Silva as one of the pin-ups in the 2002 "Men of the Hawaiian Islands" calendar, in ABC stores. ...

Alyce Cornyn-Selby, an Oregon mother who previously was a University of Hawai'i instructor, recently completed a solo cross-country drive in a vintage roadster without a windshield, top, radio, heater or AC. The car, a replica of a 1927 Type 35 Bugatti, motored from Pacific City, Ore., to Atlantic City, N.J., encompassing 30 states, 71 days and 6,509 miles. It's equivalent to 13 trips around O'ahu. Cornyn-Selby is a motivational speaker and author.

BACKSTAGE BITS: Uberprankster Ray Bumatai, who played Daddy Lusa in Diamond Head Theatre's "You Somebody" until last weekend when he had to have emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor, got the best of Loretta Ables Sayre, who portrays Pua Lusa — a character whose quest is to find her name in this column. Bumatai pulled a switcheroo with hats for himself and the actors playing their kids, substituting the headgear for miniature hats that he spray-painted to match the outfits. "They looked like a group of Stan Laurels all in a row," said Sayre. The surprise vision sent her out of control: "I burst out laughing and tried to get back into character, but my laughter burst and so did my bladder." Yep, Pua peed her pants, but a cellophane skirt helped shield her. Embarrassed but honest, she told the costume department and laundered the garment herself. The episode has her husband vowing to buy her Depends. ...

The show has been extended to Aug. 18. Meanwhile, the cast is pulling — and praying for — a speedy recovery for Bumatai, who will be replaced starting tonight by Wil Kahele, who had been playing the part of rival dad Mr. Baga. ...

The other pidgin musical in production — Lisa Matsumoto's and Roslyn Catracchia's "Once Upon One Kapakahi Time," at the Hawai'i Theatre — is a burst of color, tunes and fun, clearly mounted with ambition and heart. Members of Chant, the local R&B fave, appear as Da Pigs (Vergen Jepas, Pi'ilani Miguel, Charles Timtim), with another Chant member, Tanner Henderson, as Mabel Mongoosette. ...

RANDOM NOTES: They didn't expect to fall into controversy when members of Reign (Kale Chang, Tini Grey, Afatia Thompson, Loa Faimealelei, Kuhio Yim) entered the Mai Tai Rumble at the Mai Tai Bar in June. They won and got a gig at the club, but then a dispute developed over the band's performance times and breaks, resulting in Reign's dismissal. ...

Jimmy Borges has been asked to appear in two big jazzfests next year, the Montreal (Quebec) and the Montreux (France), thanks to many and glowing comments about his Frank Sinatra tribute. Yep, he had gotten Ol' Blue Eyes' seal of approval to use those valuable big-band arrangements ...
