Vicky Cayetano gets merit gala

Advertiser Staff

To the tune of "Hello, Dolly!" (retitled "Hello, Vicky," with new lyrics by Sharon R. Weiner), the state's first lady, Vicky Cayetano, was toasted as Hawai'i's Distinguished Citizen in a dinner gala Tuesday night at the Sheraton Waikiki hotel.

A total of $526,100 was raised from the event, sponsored by the Aloha Council Boy Scouts of America.

Cayetano, the first woman so honored, was serenaded by the Three Tin Ears, a take-off on the Three Tenors, with crooners Jimmy Borges, Jim Nabors, and — surprise! — Gov. Ben Cayetano.

"The governor held his own — he was very good," said Borges.
