Man to stand trial in girlfriend's fatal stabbing

Advertiser Staff

A District Court judge yesterday ordered that Samie Calaro be turned over to Circuit Court to stand trial on second-degree murder charges in the stabbing death of his girlfriend at the couple's home on Saturday.

Honolulu police officer Reginald Caneda was the first on the scene at the Wahiawa home at 1635 Eames St. He told District Judge Clarence Pacarro that as Ruby Mabanag lay dying, she said Calaro had stabbed her.

Dr. Kanthi von Guenthner, the city's chief medical examiner, said Mabanag, 53, died from multiple stab wounds.

Pacarro found there was sufficient evidence to turn Calaro, 44, over to Circuit Court to stand trial. He remains confined at the O'ahu Community Correctional Center, unable to post $75,000 bond.
