Weinberg gift provides meals

Hawai'i Meals on Wheels Inc. has received $6,900 from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc. The money will be used to provide hot meals that are delivered to needy elders.

Hawai'i Meals on Wheels needs individuals and organizations to sponsor routes in many Honolulu communities. All it takes to volunteer is one day a week between Monday and Friday and two hours during lunch or early dinner hours.

Bank charity assists Full Life

Full Life has been awarded a grant of $5,000 from First Hawaiian Foundation, the charitable arm of First Hawaiian Bank, to help provide personal assistance services to individuals on the Big Island who have developmental disabilities.


$2,200 goes to 'Iao center

The Maui Ocean Center presented the Hawai'i Nature Center with a check for $2,200 raised through donations to the aquarium's Malama 'Aina program. The money will support educational and environmental programs at the Hawai'i Nature Center in 'Iao Valley.

Established earlier this year by the Maui Ocean Center, Malama 'Aina is rooted in the Hawaiian concept that everything in nature is connected, from the mountains to the sea.

The Hawai'i Nature Center has been working to preserve native wildlife in the 'Iao Valley area.

With a special focus on schoolchildren, the center teaches the public about the valley's rich history, spiritual significance and ecological importance.


Award winner helps HPU

Nordic Construction, doing business in Hawai'i since 1950, recently received a national award as one of "The Principal 10 Best Companies for Employee Financial Security," in a program by The Principal Financial Group Foundation Inc. that recognizes businesses that offer exemplary benefits to employees.

As part of the recognition, Nordic was able to designate a local nonprofit community organization to receive a cash donation. The company selected Hawai'i Pacific University. According to Nordic president Glen Kaneshige, HPU was selected because it is "a leader in educating students from around the world."


Grants benefit mental health

The Mental Health Association in Hawai'i has received contributions and grants totaling $4,635 from the following organizations: AlohaCare Neighbors Program for their Mental Health Consumer Volunteers Speakers Bureau; Jhamandas Watumull Fund; GlaxoSmithKline; and the Interline Hui 'O Hawaii club.

The Mental Health Association in Hawai'i, an Aloha United Way agency, uses public education and community action in its efforts to dispel misconceptions about mental illness and to improve mental health services in Hawai'i.


Friends group gives $10,000

The Kuakini Health System has received a $10,000 donation from the Friends of Hawaii Charities Inc. The money will help the Kuakini Health System meet the cost of laboratory fees and testing supplies for free screenings provided at health fairs and to purchase health education materials.

Friends of Hawaii Charities, through a partnership with the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, distributed $700,000 to various charities.
