Oregon-bound Ma gains U.S. Amateur

Matthew Ma, a 2002 Iolani School graduate who will enroll at the University of Oregon this fall, won the lone Hawai'i spot for the U.S. Amateur Championship after a two-hole playoff with Berry Hanson, a UC-San Diego golfer, Monday at the Makaha Resort Golf Club.

Both shot 2-under-par 142 in the 36-hole qualifying.

The U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 19-25 at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
