Death of homeless man ruled homicide

The death of a homeless man whose body was found at Kea'au Beach Park in May has been classified as a homicide, police said.

Police are seeking information on the killing of John Reverio, 23, found burned May 14 in Makaha.

The body of John Reverio, 23, was found burned May 14 in the brush area of Kea'au Beach Park in Makaha, police said. He was last seen May 11 at Lahilahi Park.

No arrests have been made in connection with Reverio's death. According to the police description, he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighed 145 pounds with a medium build and had black hair, brown eyes, a mustache and goatee. He was last seen wearing a dark sweater, shorts and slippers.

Pedestrian dies in Maui accident

A 79-year-old male pedestrian was killed this morning in a traffic accident in Kahului, Maui.

The victim, identified as Teodorico R. Galiza of Kahului, was struck by a 1986 Ford Ranger pickup truck at 5:38 a.m. on West Wakea Avenue. at the intersection with South Kamehameha Avenue. A 58-year-old man, also from Kahului, was driving, police said.

Galiza was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are investigating whether speed, drugs or alcohol are factors in the case.

This is Maui County's ninth traffic fatality of the year, compared with 12 at the same time last year.

Makua fire burns 20 acres overnight

Eleven fire companies battled a brush fire in Makua this morning. Although only 20 acres were burned, it took 3 1/2 hours to contain.The fire broke out at 1:46 a.m. on a hillside between Makua Cave and the Makua Military Reservation training area, said fire department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.

No cause was determined, he said, and crews were sent to recheck the situation this morning.

Wahiawa bank robber sought

Police are seeking a man in his 30s who robbed the Bank of Hawaii branch in Wahiawa yesterday.

The man allegedly walked into the bank at 634 California Ave. at 12:45 p.m. and passed a note to the teller that demanded money.

The teller complied, police said, and the robber fled. No weapons were seen or implied, police said.

Driver in crash arrested for theft

The 28-year-old driver of a stolen pickup truck that ran a stop sign in McCully Wednesday and caused a traffic accident was arrested on suspicion of stealing the truck.

The driver fled after the accident, which occurred about 10:20 p.m. at the intersection of Citron and Wiliwili streets. His passengers, two men and a woman, also were arrested in connection with the theft.
