Leahey to anchor weekend sports

By Stephen Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

KITV sportscaster Kanoa Leahey has been promoted to weekend sports anchor and lead sports reporter.

Leahey, 24, succeeds Dan Meisenzahl, who will become a general assignment reporter.

Thursday, Leahey signed a two-year contract extension worth an estimated $55,000 annually.

Leahey, the son of K5 sportscaster Jim Leahey, is the television play-by-play announcer for Hawaiian Islander football games. He also announced University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball matches. With the new assignment, Leahey is expected to cede his volleyball job to Scott Robbs.

Leahey is a graduate of Iolani School. He has attended UH and Hawai'i Pacific University.

Meanwhile, Jim Leahey is negotiating a new contract with K5. His 18th one-year contract with K5 expired Thursday. He has been named Hawai'i's top sportscaster more than 20 times.

CORRECTION: KITV General Manager Mike Rosenberg said an earlier report listing assignments for Dan Meisenzahl and Keoki Kerr was inaccurate.
