Critic's Choice: Stage

Mini-reviews of current stage productions, by Advertiser theater critic Joseph Rozmiarek

"You Somebody": Lee Cataluna's gentle satire and Keola Beamer's playful music and lyrics combine for a warm evening based on a local family's attempts to get their names into the newspaper. A surprise addition is the trio of former Miss Hawai'is who collectively deserve the congeniality prize. Playwright Cataluna also is an Advertiser columnist. Repeats at 8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays, through Aug. 11, and extended for three more shows, 8 p.m. Aug. 16-17, 4 p.m. Aug. 18, at Diamond Head Theatre. Tickets are $10-$40. 733-0274. The Advertiser is a sponsor.

"Once Upon One Kapakahi Time": It's impossible to express caution concerning a Lisa Matsumoto show without risking public lynching. This one smashes together the highlights of most of her earlier plays into three hours of audience favorites. You will love it, but might begin to wonder if there can be too much of a good thing. Repeats 8 p.m. today, 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday and noon and 4 p.m. Sunday; $15-$35. 528-0506.
