The Buzz

A full slate at Pipeline Thursday

Just back from the Vans Warped Tour, Honolulu's own Go Jimmy Go, purveyors of ska/rock-steady sounds, will take part in a blowout at the Pipeline Cafe Thursday night. Sure, the headliners are The Mermen, from the Bay Area, but Go Jimmy Go is sure to bring in the crowds, too. The band's recent compact disc, "Soul Arrival," is tops on the KTUH New Music Top 10 list.

The music at Pipeline comes in two waves:

  • 7:30 p.m., with The Mermen and Hawai'i's own Shaka Jamba, a multicultural, world-music ensemble of singers and dancers. For 18 and older.
  • 10:30 p.m., with The Mermen and Go Jimmy Go. For 21 and older.

Admission is $10. It's a benefit for the North Shore Lifeguard Association. 589-1999.

Oh, and who are The Mermen? A trio of instrumentalists — Jim Thomas, guitar; Allen Whitman, bass; Martyn Jones, drums — offering psychedelic surf music. The band plays Maui, too:

  • 9:30 p.m. today, Casanova Restaurant, Makawao. $10. (808) 572-0220.
  • 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Bada Bing, Kihei; $7. (808) 875-0188.

The Mermen are scheduled for other O'ahu gigs, too:

  • 10:30 p.m. Aug. 9, at Haleiwa Joe's in Hale'iwa. 637-8005.
  • 9:30 p.m. Aug. 16-17, at Anna Bannana's. 946-5190.

Presenting the Royal Court

The 2002 O'ahu Aloha Festivals Royal Court — Princess Jamie Hinahinakukahakai Ernestberg of Kailua, Queen Helen Mealoha Yuk Jun Kuoha-Torco of Kailua, King Barney Kapono Isaacs of Wai'anae and Prince Justin Kawaikapuonalani Kalilimoku of Nu'uanu — will be invested in a ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall. Traditional chant and hula also are on the program, which marks the beginning of the annual Aloha Festivals celebration. It's free. 589-1771.

'Coriolanus' takes the stage tonight

Coriolanus (Moses Goods) and Aufidius (Tony Anagaran) are sworn enemies in the drama "Coriolanus," the final production in the Shakespeare Festival at Windward Community College's Paliku Theatre. The tragedy is based on the story of a proud but flawed Roman general. It's directed by Harry Wong III. Show times are 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday, repeating at 8 p.m. Aug. 9 and at 4 p.m. Aug. 10-11. Other plays in the festival continue:

  • "Two Gentlemen of Verona" takes the stage at 4 p.m. Saturday and 8 p.m. Aug. 10.
  • "Hamlet" has its finale at 8 p.m. Thursday.

'Momotaro and Other Delights'

Kristin Ing and Andrew Sakaguchi play the leading roles in the new one-act ballet piece "Momotaro & the Peach Girl," which takes the stage this weekend at Dillingham Theatre, Punahou School. It's a twist on the Japanese folk tale "Momotaro the Peach Boy"; this time, a girl is found in a magical peach. On her way to fight a demon, she meets her brother, Momotaro. The piece, conceived and choreographed by Charlys Ing, is part of a Hawaii Ballet Theatre program titled "Momotaro and Other Delights."

"Peach Girl" is preceded by "Stars 'n' Spangles," choreographed by Laurence Blake; "Strike Up the Band," choreographed by John Rampage; and "Boat Days," by Sakaguchi, whose choreographic debut is described by Charlys Ing as "stunning."

Show times are 7:30 p.m. today, 2:30 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $16 general, $12 children, military and seniors; group discounts available. 839-1596.

Waikiki calls with 'Sunset on the Beach'

"Sunset on the Beach" continues to offer entertainment, food booths and movies on a 30-foot screen this weekend, thanks to the sponsorship of First Hawaiian Bank and the Waikiki Improvement Association. At 5 p.m., radio stations XTREME 104.3 (Saturday) and KCCN FM-100 (Sunday) host programs of entertainers, DJs and contests.

The movies will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's feature is the original "Stuart Little," featuring the voice of Michael J. Fox as the mouse who's adopted by a human family; a sequel is currently in theaters. Sunday's film is the comedy "Shanghai Noon," starring Jackie Chan, Owen Wilson and Lucy Liu. It's a western in which Chan travels from China to rescue a kidnapped princess with the help, he hopes, of cowboy Wilson.
