Kailua Night Doubles final set

Unseeded Ikaika Jobe and Brad Lum-Tucker defeated fourth-seeded Chris Leong and Andrew Csordas, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 (7-2), to advance to tomorrow's final of the Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles.

Jobe and Lum-Tucker face third-seeded Brendon Curry and Erik Vervloet, who beat fifth-seeded Jan Krejci and Wei-Yu Su, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, in the other semifinal.

The final will be played at 6 p.m. at the Kailua Racquet Club.

SURFING

Hawai'i surfers advance: Hawai'i surfers Rochelle Ballard and Melanie Bartels advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's division of the U.S. Open of Surfing yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.

Bartels posted the highest score of the day with a three-wave total of 24.51 (out of 30), including a near-perfect ride of 9.17.

Two other Hawai'i women, Megan Abubo and Keala Kennelly, have yet to complete their third-round heats.

In the pro men's division, five Hawai'i surfers advanced through the first round of the main draw: Nathan Carroll, Joel Centeio, Benel Eleogram, Bruce Irons and Jesse Merle-Jones. The top-ranked Hawai'i surfers are seeded into the third round.

BILLFISH

On Line victory: Mary Martin pulled in two blue marlin to give Team On Line Sportfishing a victory in the 25th annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament Pro-Am yesterday.

On Line's captain is John Llanes and the boat owner is Steve Zehring.

Seven blue marlin were tagged and released, and one ahi weighed.

The ahi was caught by Bill Troyer of Puka Kai and weighed 145 pounds.

SOFTBALL

Pearls advance: The Pearl City Pearls defeated the Oregon Silver Bullets, 11-2, yesterday in the final game of pool play at the Amateur Softball Association Girls Western Nationals at Portland, Ore.

The Pearls are seeded second in the double-elimination tournament that begins today.

Miki Asamura pitched a five-hitter for the Pearls yesterday. Lindsey Fujita, Lauren Hiramoto, Darcie Takemoto, Robin Okawa and Johnna Rowland each had two hits for Pearl City.

YOUTH BASEBALL

Hilo team to Chicago: The Hilo Senior Boys won the Pacific Region to advance to the 10th annual RBI World Series in Chicago, starting tomorrow.

The RBI World Series is sponsored by Major League Baseball and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

The Hilo team is playing in the 16- to 18-year-old division.

The championship game will be played Aug. 12 at Comisky Park.

RODEO

Rodeo set for Aug. 17: The Nissan Extreme Rodeo is Aug. 17, from noon until sunset at Kualoa Ranch in Ka'a'awa.

The event will showcase paniolo competing in wild cow milking, team roping, match barrel racing and dash for cash, a contest where ribbons are placed on bulls and contestants run to retrieve the ribbons.

There also will be activities for kids, including a petting zoo and pony rides.

Admission for the rodeo is free. Parking is $3.
