Police arrest suspect in Kaka'ako hit-run

By Curtis Lum

Police last night arrested a man who they believe may have been driving a car that struck and seriously injured three people in Kaka'ako.

The driver of the car, described as a black sedan, fled the scene, police said. The accident occurred at about 7:50 p.m. on Auahi Street between Ward Warehouse and Ward Farmer's Market.

The three — a man, his wife and daughter — were taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. The woman was upgraded to guarded condition late last night, while the two others were in fair condition.

Police Lt. Clayton Saito said the family was in a crosswalk and had just cleared the eastbound lanes. A woman in a Toyota Tercel heading west stopped to allow the three to cross when a car behind her swerved to the right lane and struck them, Saito said.

Kimberly Hamora was in a van heading east on Auahi and saw the accident. She said the woman was thrown more than 20 feet from the point of impact.

"He just kept on going," she said of the driver in the black sedan. "It was pretty scary. I've never seen anything like that."

Police arrested a male suspect shortly after 9:30 p.m. Information on the suspect was not available, but police said he was arrested near the accident scene.
