Hawai'i surfers Abubo, Ballard gain semifinals of U.S. Open meet

Hawai'i surfers Megan Abubo and Rochelle Ballard advanced to the semifinals of the women's division of the U.S. Open of Surfing yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.

Abubo and Ballard both advanced through the quarterfinals, which were completed in 2- to 4-foot waves. Fellow Hawai'i surfers Melanie Bartels and Keala Kennelly were eliminated.

In the pro men's division, Hawai'i surfers Joel Centeio, Fred Patacchia, Roy Powers and Shawn Sutton advanced through the second round yesterday.

Hawai'i surfers Sunny Garcia and Kalani Robb are seeded into the third round. Kaua'i's Andy Irons, who is currently the world's No. 1-ranked surfer, did not enter this contest.

Results of this contest will not count on the World Championship Tour.

YOUTH BASEBALL

Babe Ruth (13-15): Nevada eliminated Hawai'i from the Babe Ruth (ages 13-15) Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament with a 13-10 victory at Fresno, Calif.

Landon Nakata batted 4-for-4, Kip Masuda 3-for-3 and Bucky Aona 2-for-4 to lead Hawai'i, which finished 3-2.

PONY (11-12): Travis Derby batted 4-for-4 and Kevin Curd drove in two runs as Mililani defeated Redlands, Calif., 8-6, yesterday at the PONY West Zone Bronco (ages 11-12) Tournament in Whittier, Calif.

T.J. Esclito batted 3-for-4, including a double and triple, and winning pitcher Dustin Antolin doubled and had an RBI.

PONY (9-10): Cory Nakagawa batted 3-for-3 and Mililani stole 10 bases to beat Morgan Hills, Calif., 8-4, yesterday at the PONY West Zone Mustang (ages 9-10) Tournament in Chino Hills, Calif.

Chad Bolibol and Keoki Lopez both batted 2-for-3 for Mililani.

CABA (12-under): Dustin Shitanishi pitched a four-hitter and Russell Doi had three hits and five RBIs as Hawai'i defeated Central Iowa, 7-1, to gain a split of a doubleheader at the Continental Amateur Baseball Association 12-under World Series in Omaha, Neb.

Omaha beat Hawai'i, 10-2, in the other game.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

Kalakaua wins: Tatri Lorenzo scored 12 points as the Kalakaua Wahine 14-under girls team defeated the San Diego Sun Devils, 49-32, yesterday at the And 1 Summer Classic in Las Vegas.

Kalakaua will defend its championship today.

KITV promotes Leahey: KITV sportscaster Kanoa Leahey has been promoted to weekend sports anchor and lead sports reporter.

Leahey, 24, succeeds Dan Meisenzahl, who will become a general assignment reporter.

Thursday, Leahey signed a two-year contract extension.

Leahey, the son of K5 sportscaster Jim Leahey, is the television play-by-play announcer for Hawaiian Islanders football games. He also announced University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball matches. With the new assignment, Leahey is expected to cede his volleyball job to Scott Robbs.

Leahey is a graduate of Iolani School. He has attended UH and Hawai'i Pacific University.

Meanwhile, Jim Leahey is negotiating a new contract with K5. His 18th one-year contract with K5 expired Thursday. He has been named Hawai'i's top sportscaster more than 20 times.

WATER POLO

Coach gets UH approval: Michel Roy, former head coach of Canada's men's and women's national teams, was approved as the new University of Hawai'i women's coach yesterday by the UH Board of Regents.

Roy will start Sept. 1.

Roy succeeds interim coach Cindy Rote, who filled in after Shari Smart left to spend more time with her family.

Rote will remain as an assistant coach.
