Metzger, Wong finish in ninth

Advertiser Staff

Punahou School alums Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong were eliminated from the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour stop in Klagenfurt, Austria yesterday.

The eighth-seeded Metzger and Wong, who had a first-round elimination bracket bye, dropped a 21-13, 17-21, 15-9 decision to No. 23 seeds Markus Egger and Sascha Heyer of Switzerland in 53 minutes.

Egger and Heyer, who advanced to their first international semifinal by winning three matches yesterday, were beaten by Metzger and Wong earlier in Switzerland.

Metzger and Wong finished in ninth place — along with Dain Blanton and Carl Henkel. Both American teams shared $5,000 in prize money.

Metzger and Wong captured the last FIVB Tour stop in Portugal, snapping a string of 14 straight championships won by teams from South America on the international tour.
