Car hits man on off-ramp

Honolulu police were investigating an accident this morning in which a pedestrian on Moanalua Freeway's westbound off-ramp at Red Hill was hit, causing him to fall over the railing to the ground below.

The pedestrian, a 30-year-old man, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center at 8:41 a.m., said Donald Gates, Emergency Medical Service assistant chief of operations.

The hospital listed the man's condition as critical.

Police released no details on the accident, but a Moanalua firefighter who was called for emergency support said the car that apparently hit the man remained at the scene.

Pawn shop holdup suspect charged

An accused robber of a Honolulu pawn shop who allegedly turned the shop owner's gun on him during his attempt to steal jewelry on Friday has been charged with first-degree robbery and attempted murder.

Guy Werner was arraigned this morning in District Court. He was being held in lieu of bail totaling $100,000.

Werner allegedly walked into A Fast Cash Pawn, 1694 Kalakaua Ave., at 1:10 p.m. and asked the owner to see rings in a jewelry case. When the owner said he would not open the case, Werner allegedly repeated the demand and punched the man with brass knuckles.

The victim told police he retrieved a revolver from beneath his counter and hit Werner on the head with it. During the struggle that continued outside the shop, Werner gained partial control of the revolver, with a finger on the trigger, and turned it until it faced the owner's chest.

A security guard helped grab the gun from Werner and subdue him, police said, and he was arrested.

The woman said she escaped when her boyfriend fell asleep, and she then called police. The boyfriend had fled by the time police arrived at the house.

Tourist robbed; 2 men sought

Police are looking for two men who robbed a male tourist early yesterday and then walked him back to his hotel.

One man allegedly approached the victim, brandished a gun and demanded money while the second man allegedly served as a lookout.

After taking the cash, the men followed the victim to his hotel, police said, remaining at a distance to avoid suspicion. Upon reaching the hotel, the victim ran inside to alert hotel staff.

A 32-year-old woman was arrested early Saturday in Waikiki after she allegedly used her high-heel shoe to rob a man who have given her a ride.

The victim, 64, picked up the suspect and two other women downtown and offered them a ride to Waikiki, police said.

The others were dropped off, but the suspect remained with the driver and waited in the car while he got out to find parking.

The victim told police he returned to his car to find the woman taking money from his fanny pack. In the struggle for the cash, the suspect hit him on the head with her shoe.

The victim called police, who arrested the woman after she tried to pass the cash to a friend standing nearby.

Suspect rams officer's car

A 28-year-old man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of criminal property damage and auto break-in after he backed into a police car while the officer investigated the break-in last week in Kalihi.

An officer found the suspect parked at 10:28 p.m. July 28 near Pu'uhale Road and Kahanu Street. The officer parked behind the suspect, who then allegedly reversed into the police car, causing an estimated $1,900 in damage.

Man arrested in Ma'ili robbery

Police arrested a 39-year-old man Saturday after he allegedly robbed a Ma'ili grocery where he was a regular customer.

A cashier at Mikilua Grocery recognized the suspect, who said he wanted to buy a cigarette lighter but had only 80 cents. The cashier told him he could pay the balance later and opened the register to deposit the 80 cents.

The suspect then reached over and grabbed all the $10 bills in the register. The owner, a 45-year-old man, attempted to stop the suspect, who allegedly punched him in the face and fled in a Buick.

The man was arrested after the car description and license number were distributed, police said.
