State Rep. BRIAN SCHATZ, D-24th (Makiki, Tantalus, Manoa), has been named executive director of Helping Hands Hawai'i. The 28-year-old nonprofit organization matches individual needs with services such as those offered by the Community Clearinghouse, Bilingual Access Line, Crisis Response System Project, Ready to Learn, Retired Senior and Volunteer Program and Volunteer Action Program.
City Bank has announced a number of hirings and promotions:
- WARREN Y. KUNIMOTO, former senior vice president of the information technology department, has been promoted to executive vice president. Kunimoto, who holds a law degree from the University of Santa Clara Law School, will oversee legal and compliance issues and retain other responsibilities.
- JASEN H. TAKEI was promoted from senior vice president to executive vice president in City Bank's mortgage banking department.
- PAUL KIM, former Bank of America Banking Center manager and assistant vice president, has been promoted at City Bank to regional manager.
- DOUGLAS WELD, a former executive officer of United California Bank, has been hired by City Bank as chief credit officer and senior vice president of the credit administration department.
Two Hawai'i Preparatory Academy alumni are among recent promotions announced at the school in Waimea, Hawai'i:
- SCOTT CRAVEN, director of planned giving, has been named acting director of development, overseeing fund raising and donor relations. He is a former senior trust administrator with First Hawaiian Bank, West Hawai'i region.
- SHIRLEY ANN FUKUMOTO, who joined Hawai'i Prep as principal of the lower and middle schools in 1992 and subsequently was promoted to director of admissions, has been named director of special programs. She will oversee the summer session and develop new academic programs. Fukumoto is a former principal at Kealakehe Intermediate School in Kona.
STANFORD "STAN" SHUTES JR., who recently retired after 25 years at the school, will return as interim director of admission, overseeing Hawai'i Prep's local, national and international marketing and recruiting. During his quarter-century of service, Shutes taught history and was principal of the upper school; athletic director; director of studies; and assistant headmaster for advancement. He also coached boys and girls cross-country and track teams that won local and state championships.
Alumna KIM GIFFIN has been named associate director of admission for the lower, middle and upper schools, succeeding Ka'ai Lincoln, who has moved to O'ahu. She is a former research assistant at Mauna Kea Astronomy Education Center in Hilo.
Another alumnus, PETER DODS, has been named assistant director of admission. Dods, who graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in economics and in Asian and Middle Eastern studies, will also coach wrestling and pre-season weights. He was most recently a financial analyst with Merrill Lynch & Co.'s investment banking division in New York.
JAMES G. FREEMAN, an associate since 2000 with the architectural, design, planning and consulting firm Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, has been made a senior associate. Freeman's projects have included the Kuhio Beach Park expansion and the Kalakaua Promenade in Waikiki.
PAMELA ZIMMERMAN has been named assistant dean of the English foundations program at Hawai'i Pacific University. Zimmerman has been associate professor at HPU for 10 years; before that, she directed the program for English as a second language at Hawai'i Loa College, which is now the Windward campus of HPU.
The Kobayashi Group, which recently purchased the Queen Kapi'olani Hotel, Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki, and the Mililani Golf Club (O'ahu), Pukalani Country Club (Maui), and Kiahuna Country Club (Kauai), has named JERRY KIMOTO general manager of the two hotels. Kimoto was formerly assistant general manager of the Ocean Resort Hotel, during its transition from a Quality Inn property.
Several promotions and appointments have been made at hotels and other businesses in the Waikoloa area of the Big Island:
- Waikoloa Land Co., owner and developer of the Waikoloa Beach Resort, has promoted DEBBIE PARMLEY to vice president of commercial real estate. In the newly created position, she will oversee the planning, development and operation of all commercial real estate. She also will continue duties as general manager of the 75,000-square-foot shopping, dining and entertainment complex, Kings' Shops.
- ROSS BIRCH, operations manager at Waikoloa Beach Resort's Kings' Course, has been promoted to head golf professional at the championship Beach Course. Birch served as tournament director of this year's season-opening LPGA event.
- DEBRA SHUMAN, former human resources manager for Waimea Falls Park on O'ahu, has been named director of human resources for the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach.
MARIO GOMEZ, former designer and junior art director for The Schiller Group, has been hired as associate designer by ADWorks, a full-service advertising, marketing, public relations and research services firm. He will be responsible for designing and creating logos, signage and ads for ADWorks clients. Also at ADWorks, former account coordinator DENISE WONG was promoted to account executive.
RUTH E. KING, who has managed Blue Lagoon Cafe and Bar, Pepper's Grill and Bar, Canyon Rentals and Denny's, has been named general manager of Dixie Grill's 'Aiea location. She replaces PHIL CAROLLO, who has taken charge at the original Honolulu location of Dixie Grill on Ward Avenue.
Actuarial and employee benefits firm Buck Consultants Inc. has hired LYNNE MIURA as health and welfare consultant in its Honolulu office. DAN McLELLAN, previously in Buck's Dallas and San Diego offices, has rejoined Buck Consultants as consulting actuary in the Honolulu office.
FRED M. NOA, former Chaney, Brooks & Co. vice president for commercial brokerage, has joined commercial real estate services company CB Richard Ellis Hawai'i Inc. Noa is a veteran in sales, leasing, development, management, consulting, marketing, construction and conflict resolution.
