The cost of learning
The worst thing about going back to school? According to parents, it's the cost of school supplies. CoolSavings, an online direct marketing and media company, surveyed 3,754 households and 35 percent of respondents said the most frustrating thing was having to buy supplies once supplied by schools. Other hot topics: peer influence on clothing choices (24 percent) and the amount spent on trendy nonessentials (22 percent).
About 56 percent of parents of teens said they paid for all of their teen's back-to-school clothes, but only 27 percent reported having a great deal of influence over what items were purchased.ÊBut most parents drew the line at pricey high-tech items. About 78 percent of respondents said they were not buying their child a cell phone, computer or pager. Of those who were purchasing technology items, cell phones topped the list at 13 percent, followed by computers at 10 percent.
