Pedestrian dies in hit-and-run
Maui police are investigating a hit-and-run fatality in which the identity of both the driver and the victim were still unknown yesterday.
At about 2:10 a.m. yesterday, police said, a vehicle traveling south on Honoapiilani Highway struck and killed a man walking on the highway.
After the collision, which took place 2.4 miles north of Pu'ukolii Road near Mile Marker #25, the vehicle then fled in an unknown direction before police arrived.
The pedestrian was described as a slim caucasian man 40 to 60 years old, wearing red nylon shoes and a black baseball cap with the logo "Moondoggy's" embroidered in blue and white.
Police said the vehicle may have been a late model, probably damaged on the front.
Maui police asked anyone with information to call the Traffic Division at 808-244-6344.
It was Maui's 10th traffic fatality this year, compared with 12 last year at this time.

Autopsy fails to identify body
LIHUE, Kaua'i An autopsy failed to give police any more clues into a woman's death on Kaua'i.
The autopsy performed Saturday on the woman's decomposed body found two days earlier in Numila also could not identify her, Kaua'i County officials said.
Tissue samples have been sent to Honolulu and the Mainland for analysis, county spokeswoman Beth Tokioka said.
Meanwhile, police are continuing to investigate the death. The body was found on private property near a fishpond along the South Shore between Numila and Lawai Bay, police said.
The area is where Lisa Simao, 38, was last seen camping on July 23.
Simao's friend said he returned to the campsite July 24 and discovered her missing, authorities said.
