Kalani Robb of O'ahu's North Shore won the pro men's division; Kekoa Bacalso, a senior-to-be at Mililani High, won the junior division (for surfers under 21).

Robb, 25, won three heats yesterday, including the four-man final, in 1- to 3-foot waves.

He received a total score of 18.43 for his top three rides to edge Australian Trent Munro (17.27). Robb opened the final with rides of 7.0 and 6.0 to give him a lead he would not relinquish.

Robb earned $10,000 for the victory, which was his first professional win in two years.

The contest did not count toward surfing's World Championship Tour ratings. However, the U.S. Open is considered the largest pro surfing event in the United States, drawing more than 600 entries and thousands of spectators.

Bacalso dominated the junior final, posting a three-wave total of 20.77. Tim Reyes of California was second with 17.64.

Bacalso earned $2,500 for the victory. Two other Hawai'i surfers made the final: Joel Centeio of Kapolei placed third, and Jordy Brough from the Big Island was fourth.

Joel Tudor of California won the longboard surfing division. Hawai'i's Kapono Nahina was eliminated in the semifinals.

Pauline Menczer of Australia won the women's longboard surfing division.
